In a nutshell…
The Spring Festival (Chun Jie 春节), most commonly known outside China as Chinese New Year’s Day, is the most important annual holiday in China and is comparable to Christmas holidays in western countries.
The celebrations correspond to the time of the year in which families gather together and make sacrifices to divinities and ancestors, Buddha prays and cleans the house from the dirt of the past year to make room for happiness and good fortune (fu 福) that comes with the new year.
Our tips:
- Stay in touch with your suppliers and request updates on production schedules
- Book space in advance for both air and sea transport so as not to risk postponing delivery
- Inform your supplier when you receive booking confirmation and organize your supply chain
- Consider alternative routes or transport solutions through our consulting service

Feb 15 (New Year’s Eve) The red lanterns are on, the dinner is ready, work activities are suspended
Feb 16 (1st day of the New Year) The New Year starts with firecrackers and fireworks!
Feb 17-18 (2nd and 3rd day) People are visiting relatives and friends and continue to celebrate
Feb 19-20 (4th and 5th day) The end of holidays starts now. Some people continue to visit relatives and friends while others are already on their way back home
Feb 21 (6th day) It’s the first day at work for many people. On this day many shops, companies and offices reopen because 6 is a lucky number in Chinese culture
Feb 22 – March 2 (from the 7th to the 15th day) Whoever is not superstitious opens on February 22 (7th day), some activities reopen on February 23 (8th day) because 8 is another lucky number. On the 15th day of the New Year (March 2) Chinese people celebrate the Lantern Festival: some go back to work the following day (March 3)
Not everyone knows that...
During the holidays, you can see lanterns hanging on most doors, good luck charms, images of divinities and red New Year’s ribbons symbolizing good luck, wealth, long life and happiness.
In China Red means good luck, joy and defense from evil: in fact red is also the institutional color Cesped!
The evening before, it’s a good idea to clean up your house in order to wipe out negativity. For the first three days of the year, on the other hand, you better not clean your house and push away the good luck!
During this time of the year many people in China decide to change their jobs and companies need to invest in 2 to 3 weeks of recruiting right after the holidays. For this reason, keep in mind that Chinese business could go back to full speed no earlier than 2/3 weeks after the holidays.
